The majority of the information needed to drive a vehicle safely through traffic is perceived via the visual channel. This complex process is affected by numerous errors and is prone to deficits and misinterpretations. The actions of the driver, however, result directly from the visual information perceived. For the reconstruction of traffic accidents as well as for their prevention, it is therefore important to explore the possibilities and limits of visual perception. This paper presents the basics of visual cognition, as well as the conditions which will impede it in conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians.
