In daily court practice, the question of the origin of stone chips and in particular the correlation to a causer repeatedly arises. Usually, cargo in the form of stones lost by a truck driving ahead is mentioned as the cause of damage to the windscreen. For this reason, the origin of stone chipping damage to windscreens was systematically investigated depending on the size, type and speed of the impacting stone. For this purpose an own experimental set-up was constructed, with which specific conditions could be reproduced. In addition, specific tests were carried out to determine the rebound behaviour of stones that fall onto the road surface and then lead to so-called direct hits.
