In this presentation we will discuss and analyse different navigational strategies for driving during the day and at night. Objects detected as danger-relevant will be displayed and analysed according to the time of day: visual perception of long-distance objects in the day time and navigational behaviour at night, which is limited by either dipped or full headlight illumination. The direct effects on the usable visual field – such as danger detection and recognition – will be clearly revealed to an expert via the provided images. Special importance will be attributed to the perception of the road layout and facilities by direct day-night comparison, the road markings will be evaluated in terms of navigational and orientational set up. Specific distractions will be pointed out. Consequently, the relation of perceptual physiology and limits for detection and recognition at different light conditions will be demonstrated to the experts.
