A large scale study of the brake performance of heavy goods truck-trailer combinations were made in 2003 to 2005 [1]. The findings are that in general the heavy goods motor vehicles perform well, but there are serious problems with the brake performance of the trailers since 38% of the trailers on the road do not fulfill the statutory requirements.
The reason for this is that trailers with the existing brake designs from the start are dimensioned with a brake performance that is too poor to maintain legal brake performance under normal use without more frequent maintenance. It is recommended that brake manufacturers maintenance prescriptions should include performance measurement at every service check, new trailers should have designedin better sturdiness and larger surplus of brake performance, roadside inspections should be more focused, and type approval directive and directive regarding periodic inspection should be more stringent.
