Reconstruction of a sports car accident using complementary evidence – tire marks, CCTV recording and EDR data

Abstract

Experts dealing with the reconstruction of vehicle accidents are interested in not only research results but also case reports (especially unusual ones), where overwhelming theoretical information is structured and illustrated with examples. This paper outlines elements of the reconstruction of a sports car accident in which three groups of evidence were revealed: tire and scratch marks on the road surface, CCTV recording, and electronic data gathered by the EDR. The problem was that none of them alone was sufficient to fully reconstruct the course of events. Only a comprehensive and complementary investigation including (1) photogrammetric analysis, (2) validation and analysis of video recording, and (3) transformations and integration of kinematic quantities allowed the causes of the accident to be revealed beyond a reasonable doubt. It has been shown that even in the era of booming electronic and information technology, reconstruction through the lens of all interrelated evidence, especially the classical mechanics, is still irreplaceable.
