Manipulation of first and second generation tachographs and their impact on road safety and the transport market

Abstract

This article concerns the impact of tampering with the records of recording devices installed in vehicles used for road transport on the safety of road users. The authors show that manipulation of analogue or digital tachograph records is not only a fraud in the widely understood professional driver's working time but, above all, a great danger of tampering with the safety systems (e.g. ABS, EBS, ESP) installed in lorries or buses. The methods of tampering with tachographs presented should be of interest to experts involved in assessing road traffic incidents involving the vehicles in questions. The consequences of a road traffic incident during which a driver tampers with the recording systems while disabling the safety systems are incalculable in size. This article is a follow-up to the earlier publication EVU 2019.
