Applying ISA Camera’s Installed in vehicles such as LKW and Buses in accident reconstruction

Abstract

LKw & Busses don’t have EDR but they are equipped with ISA. The ISA utilize cameras which determine the position of the vehicle relative to the lane and to the vehicles in front of it. These cameras record information such as road signs, road condition, the road topography etc. The paper demonstrates a way to use this information for analysis of data such as velocities, deceleration, transition points and impact point before, during and after the accident.

All videos record at a definite camera shooting rate [frames/sec.] which can be determined for each camera. This camera shooting rate defines the exact time passed from one frame to the next one. The video records the road topography, traffic signs and road markings as well as road and traffic conditions. This collected data enables the calculation of distances between specific frames. Thus facilitates the calculation of the vehicle’s velocity between two frames. The calculated points produce all the required information for the accident reconstruction. To prove this hypothesis tests were performed on LKV & Busses during normal operation. This method is proven reliable, accidents involving LKV & Busses are reconstructed utilizing this method.
