Insurance fraud represents an act committed with the intention to obtain payment from the insurer. Because such activities are related to significant economic aspects, governments and other organizations are making efforts to stop them. That is why, in the field of road accident fraud investigation, scientific probing and, especially, accident reconstruction is playing a key role. The techniques adopted in this kind of road accident analysis cover a broad range, from visual examination to instrumental procedures, and from mathematical calculation to computer simulation. Techniques which are highlighted in the paper include visual inspections of vehicles and collection of evidence, examinations by eye, infrared and ultraviolet illumination, infrared spectrometry and optical microscopy, physical measurements, damage analysis, road infrastructure analysis, mathematical and physical calculations, computer simulations, occupants’ biomechanics. The paper presents a complex reconstruction methodology that deals with interdisciplinary scientific aspects, in order to reveal how the collision occurred and to eventually establish whether or not it was a staged accident.
