Event data recordings triggered by automated emergency braking

Abstract

European-sold vehicles of the Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) have an accessible Event Data Recorder since 2018. Among the recorded data elements is a specification of the event type. In several post-accident readouts we found the event type to be "External Trigger", and in some cases "Pedestrian". These event types are not explained in the Data Limitations section of the CDR-report. We found, through testing, that recordings of the event type "External Trigger" can be triggered by an Automated Emergency Braking. That finding provides an easy means for validating pre-crash Data. We used this method to test the pre-crash speed data of a '2021 Audi A6. We found the pre-crash speed values to be 5% higher than the actual speed, which correctly reflects the deviation of the speed as indicated on the instrument panel. We also checked the data element that synchronizes the EDR-recorded pre-crash data against the EDR-recorded crash pulse, and found it to be correct as well.
