Forensic experts make use of digital photographs more and more. One of the major advantages of this technology is being able to judge the picture instantly after taking it. Relatively high costs of high quality prints and the possibility of tampering the image – be it consciously or unconsciously – are among the disadvantages. The characteristics of digital photos and the new possibilities of illustrating a case become clear when looking at digital photography not from the photographical perspective but from the point of view of information technology. This paper describes the innovations of digital photography and presents examples for practical use in accident reconstruction.
