Kuhrt, C.: Continentals Approach to the 2012 Deadline for NHTSA EDR
EDRs – Event Data Recorders, also called the car’s “black box”, are designed to record and store pre-crash and crash data. EDR is usually a secondary function of an airbag control unit, whose primary target is the protection of the occupants in case of an accident. The data stored by EDR is able to provide information to many parties, e.g. car manufacturers and suppliers, police officers, the legal system, the medical system, insurance companies, safety regulators or law makers; however, the laws of some jurisdictions and the policies of most car manufacturers provide that the EDR data belongs to the car owner (or lessee) and cannot be downloaded without the owner’s permission or without legal process (such as a subpoena or court order).
